Beauregard had sent her a gift and heard nothing back. This did not surprise him. But he'd been scolded before for gifting and not speaking, so perhaps it was worth the effort to try simply to say that he had.

If he imagined enough that nothing happened, he could nearly convince himself that that was the truth.

I'm not sure what kind of message qualifies as not ignoring you. A direct question , perhaps?

The message wouldn't reach her. Agostina had followed at least the barest rule of departure, and that was to refuse to allow him any avenue of communication with her. His number was blocked, and his message would go into the unanswered void.

When he received no immediate reply, he told himself this was to be expected.

Beauregard could be patient, when he had to be.
