Even after finding the herring he'd promised to bring for the octopus, Dominic kind of didn't really want to go visit Jaime at all. Not because he didn't like or trust the guy. Honestly, dude was one of the only nice people he knew. Honest vampire, kind, wanted the best for him. Smart dude, too. Handsome. Lot of good qualities. But... since the whole thing with learning that everything he thought he knew was totally wrong, he'd been feeling... mixed up.
Cross-Check hadn't been out in a good couple of weeks at least, largely because he didn't know how to keep himself alive anymore. He'd thrown out all his sprays and closed down his blog. He'd spent a lot of time thinking about his place in the world. Before, he'd thought it natural to want to protect vulnerable people with the power he possessed. His life had purpose and meaning and it was all centred around what people had told him was true, 100%. Except now he knew that they were wrong. Vampires didn't care about garlic, shifters didn't lose strength during the new moon, and there was nothing particularly special about being able to summon your keys from home. What was he supposed to do with that in a real crisis? Hope that the jingling keys would distract a predator?
God, he was a stupid kid.
But here he was at the vampire's door anyway, giving it three firm raps with his loosely balled fist. Ow, actually. See? He couldn't even knock a door without getting hurt!
