No one was surprised when he added acoustics to his already pleasant voice, even if he was disappointed at the side effect that prevented him from fulling hearing the result of his own power. He would have been perfectly happy pursuing a career in a symphony with his cello, but it was clear soon enough that his ability paired best with his voice, and so he got on the musical theatre route through London’s Royal Academy of Arts.
Back in the US after studying abroad, he met a certain Laurie at a psychic convention, and the mutual attraction was only deepened when they realized they shared a power. They would go on to be married, but it took a full decade before they were blessed with their first child, Holly. Unconsciously, this made him expect even more of her, since someone who makes their audience wait surely has a fabulous show to deliver?
As the family grew, his attention was split between four children who all had their own things to prove. It was an exhausting yet rewarding time that went by like a flash. And developing a second power sure helped in wrangling the rowdy quatuor. His own little band… from who he hid his second ability.
The year of Holly’s 13th birthday was pivotal for both of them, and an irony of fate. Her own power awakened, and Nolan overexerted his during a demanding tour, causing some permanent damage to his vocal cords (or so he thinks). He tried to go the regular singer route, but quit after a critic commented on how his performance had lost its magic. “If they want magic, they will have magic.” His dream of the perfect performance would have to pass through Holly and dedicated as much of his time as possible to helping her hone her own skills.
But it seemed things could only go well in one area at a time. While Holly was improving, the family life got more and more tense. Control of his children escaped him, and some compromises had to be made, to his great dislike. The price to pay to maintain peace was only getting higher. And at some point, it was no longer possible.
With all the children out of the house pursuing their own paths, he was confronted to a new reality of having no one to guide. Laurie urged him to give their kids some space, and so he begrudgingly agreed, focusing on tutoring those who actually wanted his advice, and rekindling with his dusty cello.
But his patience has limits, and seeing Holly’s name on the Into The Woods poster crossed them. Really, his own daughter wanted to keep this new milestone from him? Who was going to coach her, support her and rise her to the heights where she belonged? Himself, of course.
Fresh off the plane and staying with friends from an old Phantom production in Alder Heights, Nolan was ready for Act II of his father-coach career.
