Power/Animal Description This shocking power grants Vanna all kinds of illuminating abilities. She can take control of the electrical currents in the very air and Earth, build up or dispel static charge, summon lightning, create shockwaves, make your microwave go haywire, stop the electricity getting to your fridge and literally blow up your phone. If you ask her nicely, she can charge your device like one of those wireless charging stations! Unfortunately, control over electricity doesn't always mean she's immune to its bite. Side effects can include static shocks, electrical burns and singed hair. At its very worst, it can cause thunderclap headaches and mess with her nerves, causing damage and neuropathic pain.

Appearance

↭ Dresses in clothing that more or less covers the parts of her body she is insecure about, scars she picked up through a lifetime of hardship and trauma. She likes to look graceful and pretends to be confident through her clothing choices, but if one looks closely at the choices she makes they might notice a pattern, places she prefers to keep covered.

↭ Her hair is a point of pride her her. It’s thick and long and dark and it makes a statement about her. She takes very good care of it and makes sure it’s always in the best condition she can keep it in. And she likes it to smell nice, using a lot of hair masks and conditioners, sometimes experimenting with scents and herbs.

↭ Often looks rather severe and sharp, even when she’s smiling. Suffers terribly from Resting Bitch-Face Syndrome and wishes she didn’t. Then again, it does often mean that people leave her alone when she actually wants to be left alone, so that’s something. Her make up is usually subtle, but can be bold when she wants an extra splash of fake confidence.

↭ She knows she’s tall and she does not dress to hide it, even though she is insecure about her height. She’s trying to be better about those kinds of insecurities and she has all the time in the world now to get over herself.

Personality

⏭ Often very matter-of-fact. Likes to think of herself as logical, dealing in hard facts over emotional thinking, but what she really means by that much of the time is ignoring the emotional side of a situation to protect her ego or defend herself from becoming vulnerable. Stubborn, whenever she feels her inner pain being exposed like the raw root of a tooth, she shuts down and walls herself in further, refusing to listen to arguments presented to her, even if they are logically sound.

⏭ Though she prides herself in presenting cool and collected, she is still a rather passionate person. It means she puts herself 110% at the very least into everything she does, and always sees a project or a career change though no matter what roadblocks are in her way or how challenging things get. However, it also means that she can at times have a very short fuse and find herself wound up by something seemingly innocuous. She is also fiercely protective of others, often to her own detriment. If you even look at her family in the wrong way she will go Liam Neeson in Taken on your arse.

⏭ Vanna can be very insecure and neurotic. She’s taken a long time to grow out of traits she wound up with due to the trauma of her early childhood such as food insecurity and distrust of elders, but a lot of it still lingers as much as she likes to pretend everything is fine. She’s very hard on herself and believes herself to be undeserving of love based on her early childhood memories and on being a difficult teenager. Nothing she can do now can cleanse her of her past sins.

⏭ Holds grudges to the point of bloodlusting when she even thinks about them. Absolutely loathes her evil stepmother and what she did to their family. Don’t get her started on her grudges unless you really want to watch an eloquent Cambodian-Scot devolve from fuming and ranting into slavering and chomping.

⏭ Tries to be charitable as much as possible. She knows she was extraordinarily lucky to have found a family and a stable home and an education beyond anything she could have imagined and wants to pay it forward. The sort of person to just pay for the shopping of the person in front of her.

History

more tw for traumatic childhood, war, genocide

⇰ Born in rural Cambodia to scholarly parents in 1971, Sovanna grew up during the reign of the Khmer Rouge and experienced the Cambodian Genocide firsthand. From what she remembers, when she was four and her elder sister five, their parents were taken away and they were relocated to a home full of other children of various ages. She remembers sleepless nights wishing for her parents to be brought back. She remembers bland and not-nutritious breakfasts and the smell of poorly cooked rice porridge. She remembers sewing until her hands were cut and blistered, toiling under hot sun, hiding from soldiers barely older than she was. She remembers when they took her sister away, malnourished and weak, because she was no longer of use to the regime. She remembers how she was treated by those child soldiers when she tried to defend her sister, and how quickly she had to recant and learn to blend in to survive, blindly hoping that she would find her family again one day. She remembers the invasion and how the adults around her scattered like rats escaping a sinking ship, and how she feared the fleeing rats and the invading forces, and how she ran with a power she can still only describe as miraculous until her legs finally gave out.

⇰ On the border between Cambodia and Laos, she made some money as a pickpocket and kept herself alive, though alone, as long as she could between the ages of nine and ten. At some point a gang made up of young people - orphans older than herself but not yet adult - absorbed her into their group, wanting to use her short stature and stealth to their advantage. She got into scraps, got herself in serious trouble a couple of times, narrowly escaping with her life and without the items she tried to steal. Eventually, she was taken off the streets with false promises of finding her family and bringing her somewhere warm and safe. Very nearly a dismal statistic on some FBI or Interpol chart somewhere, Sovanna then found herself rescued when the crime syndicate that lured her in were busted before she could be moved much further than Vietnam. She wound up in an orphanage in an unfamiliar country where she did not stay long despite her fierce nature and distrust of adults. A man named Ian Blair wanted to take her in, seeing some sort of potential in her, perhaps. Maybe because she’d bit him a few times during the rescue and he wanted to be the one to drown her. She couldn’t quite tell.

⇰ Life in Glasgow was very different to life in Cambodia. It was fucking cold. Everyone spoke funny. Her new father (whose name was Samiel Blackfeather actually for some reason?? That’s hard to say when you’re a rescued child from another country!!) was patient with her. Made sure she got the best medical care. Gave her the best education. It took a very long time before she realised she wasn’t here for some nefarious purpose and nothing bad was going to happen to her. This was home. For a little while, she mellowed out, began to pay attention in her studies, all the good stuff. Then her dad went and married Natalya? For some reason? And had twins?? The audacity!

⇰ Sovanna was in her teens when Mike and Theo arrived and she loved them to bits. It soon became apparent to her that their dearest smother only liked one of the twins at all (who even does that?!) and she definitely didn’t like Vanna, and it wasn’t even clear if she liked her husband, actually. Well, Vanna didn’t need Natalya’s love. She had Samiel’s love, and she could protect the little ones from this evil, toxic bitch. Until she couldn’t. Vanna tried to convince Samiel to leave her, but was repeatedly told she was mistaken about the wicked witch’s violence towards him and to stop acting out. Angered that she was being brushed off as a jealous harpy, Vanna left home at eighteen with a family friend, who turned out to be a creep actually, so she returned a month later. The less said about that debacle, the better.

⇰ Vanna entered university late where she studied pharmacology, hoping to make a successful life for herself without having to rely on her father’s generosity any longer. Her dream was to start a pharmaceutical company, though she had no solid ideas on what exactly she wanted to do beyond that. She hated being away from her family, always worried about the twins and that Bitch, and still feels awful for choosing to “abandon” them when they needed her. She did well in uni, achieving a bachelor’s degree with honours and was quickly snapped up by a local start-up where she met a woman, fell in love, it didn’t work out, and she returned home. C’est la vie, et cetera.

⇰ Her father’s divorce incensed her something awful. How does one navigate a divorce in such a way that you split up twins? Why would you even do something like that? Vanna made many a new number and spent a lot of money making international calls to spew venom at mummy dearest before they managed to make her stop. She put more of her energy then into being available for her father and her brother, supporting them as much as she could during this devastating time. She put her own life on hold for a good few years helping them pick up the pieces. Then she met a man who wanted her for his pharmaceutical company, and once again she fell in love and “abandoned” her family. Samiel got the opportunity to meet this man and had voiced apprehension, which Vanna brushed off. Of course this man only wants the best for her! He definitely wasn’t using her status as the daughter of a successful businessman to make him look good! He certainly wasn’t manipulating her and breaking her down! She would never put herself in that kind of relationship when she’d seen one blowing up in front of her!

⇰ Except that was exactly what happened, and when she wised up, they got into a physical fight which ended in one being exposed as a vampire and the other being turned into a fledgling vampire after an “accident”. Great. Perfect. They were never ever ever ever getting back together. No matter how much he tried to lovebomb her.

⇰ At first, Sovanna returned home and pretended everything was fine. She helped Mike with homework, looked into finding a new job, locked herself in her room all day and stayed up all night, ate dinner with the family despite the horrifying throw-up scenes afterwards… Samiel began to worry about his daughter. There was a confrontation, during which she confessed that she was a vampire and wires got crossed, with Samiel grieving his daughter’s life and Vanna believing her father was angry at and afraid of her, and there was a nasty bonus. Her father was psychic. Overwhelmed with emotion and hunger, she experienced her first bloodlust of which she remembers… nothing much. But it caused her to distance herself from her family, turn her attention to her career, and stop being an overgrown child. She went back into education and studied pharmacy, deciding to build on the knowledge she already had. It took her longer to gain her new degrees as she studied part time and did evening classes and distance learning where feasible, and worked night shifts at retail and hospital pharmacies where she could, but she eventually managed to start her new career as a pharmacist. Around the same time, she developed her first power and nearly blew herself up when handling oxygen tanks. Fun times.

⇰ Only five years into her first job in this career branch, she was questioned on her youthful looks and panicked, looking for a new job and leaving just weeks after the incident, citing a mismatch in workplace culture as her reason for leaving. The same thing happened at the next job, with the same outcome. Realising that she was recognised in the community - being the daughter of a famous local businessman - she decided she had to move Very Far Away. An old colleague had talked about moving to Colorado some time ago, which had originally excluded the state from her list of places to go, but like… who even lives in Colorado, right? It’s perfect! So she packed up, changed her surname, fudged some of her legal documents a tiny bit, used some sketchy and weak suggestions to make moving away as smooth as it could be and settled into Ridgefield County a little over a year ago. She secured a job as pharmacist at the hospital in Ridgefield where she only works nights, thank goodness, and locums for other pharmacies. She’s thought about opening her own little pharmacy but she… she does not like retail pharmacy. At all.
