Appearance

At 5'6" and 145 lbs, Etta sees herself as exceedingly average. She has long brown hair with a wave to it but generally doesn't style it beyond keeping it out of the way. She has solemn brown eyes and a smile with a charming kind of crookedness to it--it seems to start with a lift on one side of her mouth and work its way across the rest of her face. She dresses with comfort in mind, often preferring neutral tones of blues, browns, greens, and greys; though it's not unheard-of for her to wear brighter things when the occasion calls for it, if she can muster the courage. Truth be told, she cringes away from scrutiny and does her best to be as unremarkable as possible in public.

With her years of working in kitchens, she's got some interesting little burn-scars here and there on her hands and arms, but nothing immediately noticeable. She's also stronger than she looks, though her ability to heft supplies and equipment isn't anything supernatural.

Personality

Aloof with strangers and priding herself on being a professional, Etta's response to stress is to push it down--deep down--and ignore it until it's convenient or no longer manageable. (Naturally, she sleeps with a mouth guard to stop her grinding her teeth.) With those she is close to, she's a much warmer person, always looking to help out where she can, if she can be sure she's not intruding or overstepping boundaries. Etta likes to stay busy, and when she's at home or driving, there's usually music she plays loudly, as if she's trying to fill the empty spaces. (Though, of course, she doesn't play it loudly enough to disturb the neighbours.) Working with food, she's gotten used to being an early riser by necessity; though if left to her own devices she's something of a night-owl, as well; and often suffers from mild insomnia. She doesn't mind too much, though...she usually has some work she can make a start on, when she can't sleep.

She always has plans whirring away in the back of her mind, but there always seems to be something holding her back. Before her restaurant crumbled, Etta was a more hopeful, bold person--now that's been tempered with a hefty dose of caution, after her setback. She'd rather go after something new than try to revive old failures; but she doesn't quite see where her future lies, either. For now, catering pays her bills and lets her get on with what she likes doing, without cramming her back into the adrenaline-rush of a restaurant kitchen.

But maybe, just maybe, in the calm order of her existence, part of her misses the adrenaline.

History

Etta grew up in Hawknell in the middle of a pack of five children by hardworking but largely absent parents. The kids mostly learned to shift for themselves, but the house was almost always in a state of some chaos, as any place will be housing seven busy people. Etta always felt closer to her siblings than her mother and father, as a result; but it wasn't an unloving home, overall. Still, it was all too easy for everyone to drift apart as they left school--and Ridgefield--to make their own lives. Etta never had much of a head for bookish things, but was always most at-peace when she was cooking for her family. She went to culinary school after graduating and got an entry-level job at a restaurant downtown, taking long bus-rides to grueling shifts, barely coping with the hectic pace and cut-throat atmosphere of a professional kitchen. She kept her mouth shut, her head down, and learned everything she could. She gradually became the only kid still living in the old Redpath house with her parents, until the summer six years ago when they rented an RV with an idea of driving it down to Arizona, and got into a fatal wreck along the way. Brothers and sisters all returned home for the funeral, but none relished the idea of staying, or dealing with everything left in the house--they were happy to let Etta stay. There was some money left to each of them, and their dreams all took them out of Colorado.

Sick of the competitiveness and graft of being under another chef's thumb, Etta plunged her portion into the idea of her own restaurant in the heart of the city centre; but she had more ambition than experience, and the lively but modest bistro struggled from the start, eventually going under in less than a year after it had opened, for a multitude of reasons. Reeling from this perhaps more than she had from the loss of her parents, Etta couldn't bear the idea of going back into the draining atmosphere of someone else's success, and adjusted her plans. Salvaging some of the industrial equipment from the restaurant, she scraped together the funds to install them into a remodel of the kitchen of the old family home, expanding it into the space of the old dining-room and leaving the rest of the rooms to their shabbiness. Since then, she's run a bespoke business from home as a personal chef and caterer for approximately the last three years.

Other

Her business, 'Eat Your Heart Out', provides delivered prepared meals as a personal chef, and can cater for small events for fewer than 100 people. She's been working on getting better at baking and decorating, to possibly provide special themed centerpiece cakes for weddings and celebrations upon request.
