Power/Animal Description Lyn is able to see and communicate with ghosts, a talent he's honed well in the last 10 years to work to his advantage. He can use it to speak with nearby spirits to find out about things that have happened nearby and to interact with objects that he can't reach or see himself. He's exceptionally good at the spirits bit but not so good at the 'raising the dead' part. He's barely aware that he can do it, considering it to be a separate idea to what he would prefer to call "mediumship". It doesn't sit right with him to puppeteer or command a dead body to do his bidding. He can make other people aware of spirits around them, but does it very rarely. Extended or intense use of his power makes him feel anaemic. He starts feeling cold and shivering with weakness, and it can last up to 24 hours following a particularly intense use of his power. In some cases he feels nauseous and further use of his power can lead to vomiting. His bones and joints can ache, too, at times to the intensity of feeling like something's broken.

Appearance

↛ Function over fashion. Tries not to wear anything that could get caught in anything in his workshop, or on fences, barbed wire, in car doors or that could be easily grabbed by an assailant. Not that he really expects to be grabbed by anyone when he deals largely with missing persons cases, putting his ability to what he thinks is good use.

↛ Looks kinda small and narrow, even though he’s decently tall. Tends to slouch. Tries to look unassuming and bland, but also believes himself to be unassuming and bland. Except those times when he thinks he’s exceptionally cute.

↛ Tired. All of the time. Rare to see Lyn looking like he’s slept well. All his best inspiration happens at stupid o’clock in the morning, so quite often he deliberately stays awake longer than he should. Result: black bags under his eyes, near constantly. Sometimes he takes a week or so to take care of himself and he looks clearer, but expect eyebags.

↛ Very expressive! Though he often comes across as annoyingly brooding and grumpy, his playful side is well practiced in exaggerated expression. Could give an alligator a run for its money sometimes.

Personality

↗ Often seems quiet, grumpy, brooding, as if he was an emo teen and the attitude wasn’t just a phase, mom. He’s pretty sure anyone else would be grumpy if their power activated in their sleep and they had a ghost bugging them about complete nonsense for an hour before they could bring it back under control. And now their eyes hurt and they’re cold and their bones are aching hours later. You’d be pissed off, too; admit it.

↗ Spend more than five minutes with Lyn and you learn that he can be playful, obnoxious, sarcastic, risqué. Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. His moods can sometimes be very changeable, but he keeps an eye on himself in case it’s something he should be worried about. He’d very much like to not wind up in a psych ward again. Seems to be something that happens to necromancers; who knew?

↗ Takes his work incredibly seriously (surprisingly), and sometimes proves himself to be a borderline workaholic. Can keep himself awake to ridiculous hours when inspiration strikes, though he’s just as likely to be found cocooned in blankets, snoozing late into the afternoon. Someone told him he should become a vampire. He’s not keen on the idea...

↗ Sways between self conscious and self-loving, but the needle lies much closer to the latter nowadays. Quietly confident, he doesn’t like the trend of modest deflection. If you tell him he’s cute, he’ll tell you he knows and point out something cute about you. Has a lot of love to give and no one to give it to! Which sucks!

↗ Black and blue humour. No subject is off-limits, though he’s hypocritical this way. If anyone else makes an off-colour joke that could be considered offensive he’s the first to reprimand them, but it wouldn’t be too surprising to hear him make a similar joke later. Sometimes uses humour in inappropriate places.

History

⇰ Born just past midnight on 7th October in Baltimore, Maryland to actress Melanie Stone-Crawford and lawyer Quentin Crawford. Upper middle-class family with an only child must mean plenty of opportunity and a breezy life for the boy, right?

⇰ Yeah, wrong. Melanie was very unwell mentally and every time she relapsed, they moved neighbourhoods to escape the stigma she thought she faced. As a result, Lyn was quiet and introverted, never really making friends. He had plenty of acquaintances but never had anyone he was especially close to. His birthday parties wound up feeling pretty lonely, even when a lot of the neighborhood kids came round. Mostly they’d group off with one another, leaving the birthday boy to play by himself. He was always close with his family, though. Except that one time in his teens when his mother was a little bit overprotective and grounded him successfully for six months.

⇰ The last time they moved, when Melanie finally became stable, Lyn began to make friends and fell in love for the first time. He wasn’t popular by any means, but he had a decent group to pal around with and get up to shenanigans together. One girl in particular, Catriona, was his best friend in the whole world. She had muscular dystrophy, but she was determined to make her short life a full and exciting one. Lyn adored her spirit and imagined a life where they’d be together forever, though he knew she never did return his feelings.

⇰ Towards the end of high school, Lyn began to develop weird symptoms. Seeing people no one else could see, hearing voices, crying, moaning, screaming. He tried to drown it out with music and slept to evade it, but it was always present. Doctors threw antipsychotics at Lyn, which made him dull, but didn’t stop the problem. It just meant he found it even more difficult to cope, in constant pain and without the force of will to do anything about it.

⇰ At the age of 18, Lyn suffered a mental breakdown because of his uncontrolled power. He was sent to a psych unit to recover and was again misdiagnosed, and once he was no longer a threat to himself or anyone else, he was released home, no less confused or anguished about the horrors and agony he experienced. There were brief moments of calm when everything just stopped, but not realising that he even had a power to begin with and accepting that he must just be “crazy like mom”, he suffered deeply any time his control went haywire.

⇰ A man named Luke recognised Lyn’s talent for what it was and offered to help him learn to control his power. He entered into a relationship with the older man in which he was grossly taken advantage of. Lyn doesn’t think of what happened as abuse, though others might. He does resent Luke, though he believes the man helped him to control his power better. In reality, Luke made him aware of his power and Lyn did the real work. Luke just used his naivete against him. They broke up after about a year, when Lyn realised he wasn’t the only “special” one in the older psychic’s clutches.

⇰ Between 20 and 24, Lyn suffered bouts of depression followed by periods of dizzying highs. He became somewhat promiscuous and sort of a risk-taker. When depressed, he was numb and difficult to reach. When he was manic, he couldn’t be talked down, his thoughts raced, his moods were highly labile. Finally he was taken to hospital and diagnosed with bipolar disorder type 2. With a handle on his power and the right diagnosis to work with, Lyn slowly began to adjust to something that could be called normal. Overcome with a desire to get out of Baltimore, he moved around for a while, looking for purpose and somewhere he felt more at home. Eventually he moved back to his paternal grandparents’ home of Colorado, where he continued to bounce from town to town, never fully satisfied. It sort of got to him that this was the same kind of behaviour his mother exhibited when he was a kid.

⇰ Entering into a period of stability, Lyn decided he wanted to put his powers to good use instead of using them to prank people and hit up dead people when he was bored and lonely. Though he tends to think of it as “cheating”, he wanted to use his necromancy to help people find their loved ones after spending time with spirits and hearing their stories. He started to look into the requirements for becoming a private detective, with his parents loaning him the money to open an office in his new home (though his office space remains basically a converted apartment - he would like to relocate eventually). Other than that, he sometimes makes music boxes, or does odd jobs for neighbours, determined not to have to live off mom and dad for the rest of his life. He’s been in Ridgefield County for six months and is going to stay here even if he hates everything and everyone.

Other

⇗ Bipolar, medicated. Would like to not have to take meds and is looking into not having to do that. Has been fairly stable for a while, with a few dips here and there.

⇗ Left Baltimore to escape the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe. They don’t like each other. At all. Or that’s what he tells people, anyway. Up to you whether you believe it.

⇗ Is very uncomfortable with infidelity cases. Usually won’t take them on. Prefers missing persons cases as he thinks they’re more important and doesn’t have a lot of faith in the police to put enough resources into certain cases.

⇗ Has scars on his chest following his mental breakdown at 18. He was in a bad place then but is comfortable with them now. Handwaves them as being from a stupid childhood decision and laughs it off. Kind of thinks his thought processes were embarrassing.

⇗ As a hobby he enjoys building clockwork things. Mostly… clocks. And music boxes. Learned to do this from his grandfather when he was young, and just likes to tinker with things when he needs new inspiration or something to do.
