First Ability Pyrokinesis
Second Ability Teleportation
Power/Animal Description While drawing upon the Metaphysical energy, Nate can see vibrant auras surrounding supernatural beings - though he cannot differentiate their species. In general utilizing this energy, whether to access this sixth sense or make use of one of his abilities, will cause a slight headache which will only worsen with intensity and consecutive usage. After a couple of uses he will suffer from a sickening migraine, a bloody nose, and should he push it any further he will pass out - oftentimes remaining unconscious and thus vulnerable for several hours.

In general his two abilities represent the two sides of his personality: One which is fiery and protective, and the other which is fearful and reclusive. In many ways he views it as two sides to the fight or flight mechanic, something he experiences frequently as a result of his generalized anxiety. Pyrokinesis is the manifestation of fight, ferocious and dangerous yet quick to burn out, while Teleportation is a literal embodiment of flight. It can get him out of situations he doesn't wish to be in, a quick escape plan...

Truth be told he does not use either in excess. The days of him using his Teleportation ability to visit his brother are more or less gone now that he isn't being kept from him, and he's learned first hand how unpredictable and deadly Pyrokinesis can be. When he is put into those fight or flight situations, ones not solely born of anxiety but instead grounded in real threat, one or the other will rear its head... And he isn't always exactly in control of which of them it'll be.

Appearance
To say that Nate is a little rough around the edges would be a gross understatement. Though he will do his best to neaten up in time for work, so as not to lose his job, a lack of any real amenities or drive tend to leave him worse for wear. He's not above wearing the same set of clothes all week if it means saving a few quarters, and he only showers about as frequently as he changes so as not to use up all the water. Maybe in other circumstances he'd take better care of himself, but who can say for certain?
Personality
Above all else, Nathaniel wants nothing more than to see his brother safe and provided for.

For as long as he can recall it's always been that way, but never more so than following the death of their parents and their journey into the foster system. As a result he's never developed much in the way of personal ambitions or dreams, he never bothered with college and found himself in a dead end job as a bartender in a dive bar pretty early on in life. Even his home is little more than an abandoned warehouse in Rice Bluff which happened to still be hooked up to utilities... though he's afraid to take advantage of such and have the power and water companies out to check on it, and thus uses them as minimally as possible.

Though he could have saved for a proper apartment with real amenities over the years, made a better life for himself through tips and meager pay, Nate instead set aside every cent he could spare to ensure that Thomas could - and did - go to college when the time came. Even though that time has passed he's still fighting to keep on top of the payments and has thus far managed to keep his part in Tom's education a secret, claiming it was simply part of their non-existent inheritance.

Past experiences have left him pretty shaken, in fact he spends most of his time in a general state of anxiety. His psychic abilities don't exactly help with this either, his affinity for flame fueling a volatile state within him while his ability to teleport only amplifies his desire to flee from even minor struggles and setbacks. He's the epitome of fight or flight in dichotomous form, and even he is never quite sure which side will win out when the need arises.
History
The first fourteen years of Nate's life could be described as nothing short of ordinary.

He had a regular old nuclear family, mom and dad still together after two decades, high school sweethearts if you could believe it, and one sibling: Thomas, his younger brother. Both had been planned, adored... They fought like hell but which brothers don't? Nathaniel was excelling in school, had just finished junior high and was hoping to try out for the soccer team at their local high school when their family was torn apart.

It was just an accident, the reports stated in the aftermath of the fire. A freak accident. A poorly assembled electrical panel. A ticking time bomb they said, they were lucky it hadn't happened sooner, as if a tragedy now wasn't as bad as a tragedy then... Their dad had gotten the boys out, told Nate to watch Tom and then re-entered the building in search of his wife. For months after he relived the roof collapse in his nightmares, wondered if there had been anything he could have done...

The boys were taken in by a foster family, a couple without any children of their own who had been more than happy to take a sibling pair, and though life was by no means perfect they did return to a steady routine - grateful that they were able to remain together. As the nightmares continued though and Nate became more and more sleep deprived as a result his temper became all the more uncontrollable. He felt angry all the time, even on days where everything seemed okay, and no matter what he did to try and quell it his control of such emotions always seemed out of reach.

Thomas too seemed to be slipping.

The situation came to a head one night, just a few months into their stay with the foster family, when almost consecutively the boys manifested pyrokinetic powers. In the aftermath of their brief discovery, nary more than a small flame produced by either of them, a certain catharsis washed over them and expelled a lot of the rage which had been building up inside. They couldn't quite explain the phenomenon but over the next few weeks they tried to figure it out, experimenting long into the night.

They didn't mean for it to get out of hand. Honestly, it just sort of happened... One minute they had everything under control, and the next their room was engulfed. Nate probably stood there for far longer than he should have, simply staring at the flames as they rose higher and higher, unable to shake the feeling that this was just another nightmare. Eventually though he came to his senses and worked to get himself and Thomas out of the inferno.

By the time he even thought about their foster parents, once outside and on the front lawn, it was too late. No alarm had signaled, they probably didn't even feel the lick of the flames before the smoke got them. Thankfully a neighbour called and the flames were doused, but it was too late for the brothers. Their one shot at staying together was gone.

In the death of yet another set of caretakers Thomas was sent to live with a new foster family... Nate however was regarded as a suspect. Clear evidence linked the source of the fire as having come from their bedroom, and given that there was no real way he could explain it away without sounding crazed he ended up conjuring up a story about stray cigarette ash and was whisked away to juvie. Thankfully nobody suspected any real foul play, and he was just about young enough that he was tried as a child as a result. Involuntary manslaughter they called it...

He was given four years in a local juvenile facility, and served just over three - getting out early for good behaviour and the completion of his GEDs. From there he went into a halfway house, not quite old enough to be out of the system but close enough to his eighteenth birthday that the likelihood of anyone taking him in was slim to none. Especially given his record. He found a job working in a factory down in Rice Bluff, and on his days off he fought to get visitation with his brother.

They refused him. Something about Thomas being in a better place now, keeping up with his studies, doing well. Didn't want Nate to ruin his progress... He became obsessed, every free thought was filled with plans on how to find him. After all, all he wanted was to see his brother. Was that so bad? Nate began digging, finding any information he could as to the location of Thomas, and eventually he struck gold. A social media post from one of their old schoolmates revealed a picture of Tom at Nate's old school. And what's more, it was recent.

Well, from there it was pretty easy to find out where he lived. A decently nice house, in a decently nice part of town, owned by a seemingly nice couple. For a few nights he simply watched. Figured out the layout of the house, where Tom slept... And then he built up the courage to approach him. He climbed to Thomas' window, just an hour or so after the house went dark, and knocked on the window to wake him up.

Their reunion was bittersweet. The social worker hadn't been lying when she informed him that Thomas had been doing better, he was practically a new boy. Of course, the years apart helped in that department. He visited a couple more times, in a similar fashion, before the couple caught wind of what was happening and told Nate that they'd call the police if he came poking around again. Even got some fancy surveillance cameras installed.

Nate was back to brooding, to obsessing. Some nights he'd lie there and simply visualize the room, hoping and praying that he could just discover a way back. Maybe a way to convince them that he wouldn't be so bad of an influence. In another month of so he'd be eighteen... Then he could petition for custody, couldn't he?

Then he'd have no home. The halfway house would only keep him until he came of age, then after a few weeks he'd be out on his own. Not long to find a place... Not long to get his shit together. He couldn't get the thoughts from his mind.

One night it seemed as though someone had listened in and seen fit to grant his wish, because one moment he was pacing his room fretting over it and the next there was a plush rug beneath his feet. His head swam, nose ached with immense pressure, enough that he knew it wasn't a dream. It was Thomas' room... Somehow he'd ended up in Thomas' room.

After waking him the pair spent the night working through Nate's newfound power. Try as he might he couldn't quite get it to happen a second time, in fact his attempts left him with a bloody nose and a serious migraine. They fell asleep ahead of dawn, no closer to an answer, and when a knock on Tom's door woke them up he hid in the closet until everyone had left then spent the rest of the day trying to figure it out some more.

By the time Tom came home Nate was gone. He'd successfully figured out a way back home, though upon reaching his room he collapsed and didn't wake for several hours. It didn't matter though, the bloody nose, the migraine, the fact that he passed out. With any luck further trial and error might permit him to visit Tom on a whim, and he was more than willing to suffer a few maladies to make that so.

The boys soon discovered that Nate wasn't the only one who had developed a secondary power. Unlike their first, which had been shared by the two of them, this time their powers differed... But only so much. Where Nate could teleport himself between known locations, Thomas it seemed could do almost the opposite. He could summon items, seemingly from thin air though they quickly realized that too had a fixed point in the world. Nate was transporting himself, and Thomas was transporting objects.

All too soon Nate's eighteenth birthday rolled around and then the date he had to leave the house. Though he was still no closer to finding a place of his own he lied to his social worker and assured her everything was sorted. When night fell that evening and he finished work he made his way into one of the many abandoned buildings in Rice Bluff with what few belongings he owned, and therein set up a sort of... camp.

Over the next few months that camp became a makeshift home. The previous owners of the warehouse hadn't cut power or water to the facility, and apparently someone was still paying for it as nobody ever came out to shut it off. Not one to risk his luck he made sure to keep his usage of both to a minimum, any lights dim so as not to attract attention from passers by, and realized that for as long as he was able to squat there he'd have someplace to call home.

No court would ever deem it a safe place for a child though.

So Nate continued to practice teleporting, eventually working to bring hand held items with him, all the while the boys talked about what could be. A life together, like old times. Thomas didn't even really need convincing, apparently it had been on his mind too. Even knowing the living situation Nate had made for himself didn't deter him. And eventually, with constant work and more than his fair share of accidents which often led to unconsciousness, Nate was able to bring Thomas along with him. Away from his foster family, away from his school... Home.

Didn't matter what it looked like. It was home.

From then on, every cent Nate made he set aside in preparation for Thomas' future. Due to the nature of their circumstances his brother couldn't exactly finish up school at present but that didn't stop Nate from tutoring him when he wasn't at work, trying to help keep him up to date on his studies. They'd borrow books from the library and work by virtue of candlelight, vowing that when Thomas was of age they'd make sure he got his GED and went to college. It didn't matter the cost, Nate would make sure of it.

They kept a low profile. Nate quit his job at the factory and took an under the table position in a dive bar for crappy pay... But there was no paper trail. The social didn't know where he was, they couldn't swoop in and steal Thomas away again, and that was what mattered. Life continued on pretty much the same way for the next few years, with frequent tension mounting between the brothers. After all it was a stressful existence, with miserable surroundings. They had to be cautious.

When Thomas turned eighteen though some of the weight lifted. He was out of the system now, eyes wouldn't be on them and though they both lamented the loss of part of Tom's childhood, in that he never got to graduate, among other things, neither regretted it. Their struggles brought them closer.

As promised, Nate enrolled Thomas into community college the moment he turned eighteen and set him on an accelerated course which would get him his GEDs. He picked up more shifts at work in order to afford the courses and the supplies, though he did his best to keep such from Thomas. Whenever the conversation came up he'd simply say it had been part of their inheritance, not that their parents had ever had time to draft up a will of course, and that he didn't need to worry.

Soon enough Thomas was off to college, reclaiming some of the freedoms they'd had to sacrifice, making friends and practicing his art. For Nate though life stayed pretty much the same. After all he had college loans to make payments for, and they definitely weren't cheap. Still, at least he was free to see his brother whenever he liked, at least he knew he was safe... At least he knew his future would be nothing like his.
