With well over a century's experience with this ability under his belt, Alby is a well practiced user of his nearly-invisible force shield. At a size just beyond his fingertips, he can hold it without ill effect for about ten minutes when its not being attacked, but under "fire" so to speak it can only hold out for about five on average, less under heavy bombardment. If he tries to hold it past this time, he will quickly begin to experience tingling in his extremities, which is a warning for him to get out, because if he holds it longer than a minute or so after that the shield will abruptly collapse into him and leave him stunned and vulnerable for several minutes. Alby rarely makes the shield larger than strictly necessary, though he can attain max range and hold it for approximately one minute in ideal circumstance.
The shield itself is invisible until it is struck, at which point the energy of the sphere radiates a curved green-gold glow--how much it lights up depends on how hard it was hit or what size an object/force.

Personality
- Friendly but private, with a preference towards being reassuring even while harboring a more cynical undercurrent
- Once relatively naive, Alby has experienced enough to realize that merely being 'good' is a great way to end up dead
- Capable of being assertive when he feels it's his place to be, but more inclined to let someone else handle it
- He has an ego and knows his worth, but this is a trait he keeps closer at hand and disguises with wry humility
- Not open, potentially hostile about discussing private affairs unwillingly, especially if they impinge on his pride
- Quick-tempered but likely to throw irritation behind a smile
- Is thorough but not obsessive with his duties, isn't afraid to take thing slow because life is... long

- Has a hang up about making sure he feeds often enough, not looking to starve to death a second time or come even close
History
- Born 1816, near Galway, Ireland as Ailbe Ó Gríofa, second to last child of a large family. Grew up working more than learning, a tepid child who thought of little beyond his rural home.
- Wed in 1838, maintained a simple but happy lifestyle, nearly self-sustaining.
- Had three children over the course of several years. Lost one early on when the potato famine gripped Ireland, became very fixated on keeping his family fed to his own detriment. Would give up what food he could find for them, eating little to nothing himself most of the time.
- Had a close friend (Bard Ó Ceallaigh) who adored him and his kind spirit, who he only ever saw at night. Was offered a way out of his slow starvation, a cure it was called. Took it, felt tired and betrayed when it seemed not to work, and wasted away on his death bed that week in some sad month in 1848.
- Woke again that night, relieved and confused and Bard returned to explain it all--which sent him right back to dread, until a plan was conspired, and suggestions on the new vampire meant to keep the family safe were put into play.
- Through well placed suggestions on the family itself and careful planning, Bard and Ailbe took Ailbe's family away from the horror that Ireland had become for them, and emigrated by coffin ship to America. Lost another child along the way and nearly his wife, but she lived and they did the best with what hope they had.
- Settled in New York late in the year in 1849, Ailbe finding work as a slightly oddball cobbler, working with his sire, and continuing to suggest the family as necessary. It was stressful, but at least with Bard's help there was always plenty to eat. That was always important.
- They found a group of vampires a few years later, all of whom had used large flocks of emigration to arrive in America. Together they formed a clutch, which just drew him more and more into vampire life and away from his more human aspects.
- By 1860, his only remaining child grown and moved on, he could not longer bear to keep suggesting and deceiving his wife, or keep reason as to why he never seemed to age, and made the decision to break her heart and disappear, leaving her only what funds he did not need for his own minimal support.
- Shortly after, the clutch decided New York was getting too crowded, as they weren't the only clutch there. They opted to move westward, just in time to avoid the bulk of the American Civil War. During this time, Ailbe simplified his name to Alby Griffin and began to work on losing his obvious Irish accent.
- Trains and other modern means got them, eventually, safely to Oregon, where the clutch settled again, having only lost one to second-death and another to disinterest along the way.
- Stayed in Oregon, finding various work over the years to make a comfortable life for himself. Stuck with Bard--more often called Brian now--as his housemate and confidant for many years. They weather many storms and dodged many would-be wars together. The clutch flexed in leadership around them, but Brian was his one constant in everything.
- Never aspired to or rose to leadership, focused instead on himself and making sure he--and others--were fed and safe. Felt at times like he was living a half life, but eventually being able to see some fashion as daylight when he discovered his animal form helped alleviate some of the grimness that had started to take him in the 1950s in particular.
- Began retail work as a way to meet (and eat) people in the 70's, really took a shine to it, though what he could do was limited by needing take the night shifts. Didn't pay a lot but he didn't need a lot to begin with.
- 1994, Brian disappeared without a trace. Alby, stricken, spent several years in Oregon searching for him and hoping he will return, but ultimately assumes that somewhere, somehow, he was ashed.
- 2001, feeling disconnected, he leaves the long-standing clutch and moves on, privately hoping that he might come across a trace of his friend eventually, though he never does, even moving city to city for a time.
- Early 2020, lands a job that suits him in Ridgefield County, Colorado and decides it might actually be time to try and put it all behind him and find something secure and entirely new.
- Finds Imran wandering one night, a new and dazed vampire just doing his best, and takes him under his wing. Helps him out with an incidental murder and ultimately has him move in.
- Together, they join Eventide District.
- Eventually, Imran moves on to see more of the world, not wanting to be pinned in one place by circumstances.
- A subsequently lonely Alby is approached by Raziyya, who takes a shine to him and ultimately asks him to be her praetor.
Relationships
- Raziyya al-Dimashqi - While he's still not sure why she took such an interest in him, he will admit that it seems rather mutual now. Razi can sway him in a way few others can, and he appreciates the push into the unknown that she is giving him. He knows she will not let him falter too badly--so long as he's not truly a fool.
- Beauregard Bertrand - A Dominus he decided he could trust early on. They don't know each other half as well as they should, but Alby is certain he could turn to the man for anything if needs be.
- Tikanni Calder - A friendly relationship. He finds the other vampire somewhat bewilderingly enthusiastic and childlike at times, but that's also part of the charm.
- Imran Hussain - originally, he was Imran's mentor, making sure he didn't succumb to the woes of being a new vampire left alone. Then Imran was his best friend. He still is, even if he's gone to see more of the world on his own. They're still in contact, but that doesn't stop the missing.

- Has more or less completely lost all of his Irish Gaelic but can dredge back up the accent if he needs to--but usually doesn't
