Katya's audacity, exaggeration, and selfishness are grounded in her own understanding of what it means to be realistic. She's a social butterfly who can click and become fast friends with someone just as fast as she can decide she's against them and everything they stand for. There is, often, no middle ground or safe space for negotiation with her
She acts with pure conviction and stands by her decisions, even when they might be wrong. For her it's not a matter of pride but trust in herself, and it's why she's willing to die on the hill defending anyone she considers kin
Grief is a common ghost in Katya's mind. She struggles with apathy and emotional detachment, and will shut others out in a split second if it's what she decides at the behest of her emotions. Forgiveness is near impossible when the past is the present to her, but she upholds the notion of the enemy of the enemy is her friend; Katya doesn't need to like or agree with somebody's company to get along with them
She prefers to wade through hardship alone, a trait that has become fact when so much of her now lies in being a source of strength to others, whether or not they're asking for it
History
Portland, Oregon, was where Katya spent her time growing up, entrenched within the Russian diaspora until the age of eight, when her father passed away in a workplace accident at his laborious job
She remembers the effects of it more than the loss. Her mother spun out close to overnight, and they remained a two-person family for only a short time before a young Katya was being introduced to the household environment of drugs, mom's new boyfriend, and living under the constant threat of eviction
Home was an unfamiliar place to be. High school was a blur of detentions and tired eyed experimentation. When Katya was old enough and beginning to split away with finances of her own, she settled her younger half-brother with their grandparents. Most of the odd jobs she picked up didn't last, but they served their purpose while she couch-surfed, and at twenty-one she made the risky move to Colorado
Rice Bluff was less grimy than where she'd been coming from. Since then she's experienced great highs and lows, new friendships and new losses. She's gone from searching for father figures to not needing them whatsoever. From broke and sleeping in a car to running a business of her own. A lot’s happened that's made her properly grown. She could be better, but she assumes it isn't her responsibility to be more than she already is
