Animal Appearance At a glance, Tabby could be mistaken for a small wolf or a weird pointy-faced dog with a stubby tail. Measuring 47 inches long, 19 inches from paw to shoulder and weighing 12 kg in animal form, one with a keen eye may recognise that she is actually a golden jackal. Red-gold fur indicates that she is of the European jackal subspecies. Her underbelly and the area under her muzzle are white, while her back and face are much darker, with some black throughout her fur. Her face kind of looks sooty, like she's been digging around in coal, or went face-first down a chimney. Her eyes are a pale yellow, which at least helps her look like any other jackal.
Appearance

⤞ She feels like she’s tiny, though she stands roughly around average height for a woman in the States. Maybe just a smidge taller. Since she’s fairly pale, her dark hair and eyes are pretty striking. She prefers to keep her hair short, mainly for convenience, though she does feel like there’s more she can do to style it when it’s short.

⤞ Tabitha doesn’t really have a fixed style, but she may surprise people when she turns up to a meeting in a bright, colourful dress after three months of obsession with a leather look. She goes through styles in phases. She isn’t really trying to find her identity or figure out how she’s comfortable. She’s already comfortable; she just gets attached to a certain look for a period of time.

⤞ Was really upset when she realised her were status meant piercings wouldn’t just stay put, so she got a series of tattoos on her legs and one on her back. She has a small burn scar on one of her fingers and another on the back of her neck after stubbornly refusing to stop wearing her silver jewellery. (She has since given this away.)

⤞ Doesn’t go ham on make up, though she does own a decent amount of lipstick colours and eyeshadow palettes. She kind of prefers to practice on other people, which makes sense considering her new major at college.

Personality

⤖ Caring and kind, Tabitha can’t walk away from someone in need, even if she really would prefer to have the ability to. Physically she could, but morally it wouldn’t be worth it. She’d sleep better at night if she did what she could do instead of taking the path of least resistance.

⤖ Tends to jump to conclusions pretty wildly. Fills in blanks in situations and doesn’t always get it right, but gets offended or upset over it without confirming the truth. As an example, maybe she finds a person standing with an injured person who seems frightened. She’ll assume the first person is an assailant without confirming first and charge in guns blazing.

⤖ When she wants something, she’s focused on it 100% and she’ll get it. If there’s any reason she absolutely cannot get it, it puts her in a low mood for a long time, and she begins to question herself and her ability. But she’ll try absolutely everything before she lets herself get into that position.

⤖ Get her started on any subject she’s even slightly familiar with and she will talk your ears off for hours. Could be fascinating if she’s talking about something like film or special effects. Less so if you’ve got her mad about politics or injustices real or perceived. She does love to learn, however, so if you can cut in with something interesting at any point she’ll switch to listening and nod her head in wide-eyed fascination.

⤖ She can be pretty moody. She is still young and gives herself over to her emotions more often than not. Often results in unwanted shifts, but at least she’s a playful jackal.

History

⭃ The result of a fling with Geoff Amur, Tabitha was born to museum education officer Nina Yardley in Phoenix, Arizona nine months following an event held at the museum. Geoff was a guest of honour. One thing led to another. Scandalous behaviour ensued. More than once. Even after Tabby was born. It’s kind of amazing she doesn’t have full siblings.

⭃ Nina and Geoff didn’t really see each other often or keep in touch, seeing each other only when Geoff’s work brought him back to Phoenix. Tabby met Geoff at an event when she was very little, but didn’t understand the significance of their meeting due to her mother’s vague implications around the event. As if it was all a dirty little secret. Which she kinda reckons it was now she thinks about it.

⭃ The little two-person household didn’t have a great deal of money when Tabby was growing up, but they were always comfortable. They had a couple of difficult spots, but nothing they couldn’t handle. Tabitha was sometimes teased in school for being from a single-parent family, for not knowing her dad, but aside from one or two chocolate milk incidents she never really let it bother her.

⭃ In her early teens, though, it started bothering her. She at least knew her dad’s name and what he did for a living. A quick Google search told her everything she thought she needed to know. That he was in a pretty well-paid career, that he was married, that he had a family. She began to wonder what was wrong with her, what was so special about his “real” kids. Typical teen angst stuff. It did affect her pretty deeply, but it also built a resolve in her to succeed under her own steam. Her mother did try to explain things from her perspective and Geoff’s perspective, but Tabitha wouldn’t hear it. At least she had determination and will; that had to be a positive.

⭃ After graduating high school, Tabby decided she wanted to go into nursing, though she also had a keen interest in special effects and prosthetics - monster make up, practical effects and props. She figured she could do that as a hobby while pursuing nursing and entered into a course. First year breezed by, she made lots of friends. She was feeling pretty unstoppable.

⭃ One summer, she volunteered to go to Kenya alongside some classmates to work with disadvantaged children. One night, there was word of a strange-looking jackal behaving erratically that people should be on the lookout for. It wasn’t for another few nights that Tabby saw the jackal in person, and she was startled by how big it was in comparison to other jackals she’d seen. She tried to sneak away, to not call attention to herself so she could find someone to catch it or kill it - the consensus was that it was rabid. It spotted her and gave chase, snapping at her heels with its huge curved teeth. It caught up to her and gripped her ankle, and Tabby really thought it was the end for her until a group of men came to chase the jackal down. They injured it, but it ultimately escaped.

⭃ Tabby was taken to the nearest city and administered rabies shots. Not long after, she left for home, where she continued her rabies PEP. The full moon arrived within days. Surprise! It’s a jackal!

⭃ After a few uncontrolled and difficult shifts she was confronted by members of a local coyote group. Turned out she’d been bothering people’s pets and smaller shifters and the neighbourhoods she terrorised thought she was a bizarre-looking coyote. Which understandably looks bad on a werecoyote group. They agreed to help her gain control and looked out for her for a while as she got her head together.

⭃ She began to realise that she couldn’t continue her nursing education as a were, which devastated her. She took time out of studying and tried to decide where she should go next. She didn’t feel like she really fit in with the coyotes, either, and they seemed to kind of resent her after her disastrous introduction to the community. She needed breathing space.

⭃ Deciding to turn her special effects hobby into a career, she applied to several programs in nearby states and was accepted to one in Ridgefield County. So she packed up, said goodbye to mom and the ‘yotes, and moved up (down? sideways??) in life. She still keeps in touch with one or two of the ‘yotes and some of her “normal” friends, but is trying to just put a positive spin on life and make the most of what she has. At least… until something else happens to turn her on her head.

Other

⭆ Though her father was incredibly hands-off with her and didn’t really stick around to raise her (or talk to her or really get to know her…) he did set up a trust fund for her to be accessed when she turned 21. Her mother kept it secret from her so she wouldn’t lose her fire and become dependent on other people’s money, but when she finds out about it… yeah, she’s gonna be mad. NB: she was, in fact, mad.

⭆ She has no idea her half-sister is wandering around Ridgefield County, but she’s about to find out, and she’s probably going to let herself get mad about it. NB: Again, she was, in fact, mad about it.

⭆ She tried to keep a pet rat she adopted from her university, but the jackal thought it looked like an easy meal and she had to rehome it.

⭆ While studying, she’s also a sales assistant at a department store. She gets bounced around the departments and kinda hates it, but at least it’s money.
